I just recently returned from a short little jaunt out to Los Angeles, California for a graduation, family visit and eating out from LA to Long Beach to Camarillo- just a bit north of LA.
Flying in from LAX to our very inexpensive one night hotel- full of very interesting characters- and close by to a mainstay in Central LA. I did not take the opportunity to check out the doughnuts but if you happen to pass by this landmark you might want to check it out yourself or at least gaze at the sight of this huge doughnut!
Highlights of the trip
Alamo car rental rocks! Brand new cars all types of makes- we were partial to the white Jeep Laredo all options were included and the rate was fair. Very easy to hop from LAX on the shuttle- to pick up your car and get on your way. Very impressed.
USC (University of Southern California) has the same maroon/gold colors as the University of Minnesota.
Harold and Belle's – cajun in Central LA- excellent mojito's and shrimp scampi- other parts sketchy after their transfer of ownership but check it out. Make reservations early!
Lacma- Los Angeles County Museum of Art- Fridays free jazz nights- absolutely fabulous- gift shop even better for sparkly interesting objects d'art. Next visit have to plan a day to tour- maybe two! Also has Salsa nights I believe on Saturday eves- A must see! Careful leaving- my companion and I got lost in the hills of Hollywood- interesting that people actually live on a very cramped over priced hill with views of the city and the 405- but reminiscent of the winding tiny streets in the islands of the Mediterranean.
Camarillo- home of my beautiful niece Maya- 6 months old already- and a more peaceful side of Cali- nestled in the hills next to Thousand Oaks and close to the 'Valley'- you have a mix of mountains on one side and only 15 minutes away from the ocean with those wonderful white sand beaches, crashing white capped waves and smoothed ocean stones scattered along the beach.
Wood Ranch grille good food, great service but a wait- try to reserve ahead of time- excellent ribs, steaks, salads… don't forget to try the smashed sweet potatoes too!
Iquana's is a Mexican restaurant – stucco, colorful and busy- just west of the Spanish Hills area. Loved their margaritas- staff was top notch! Food- 7.5 out of 10- the fajitas were 10+, enchiladas 8, rice and beans- cant do much wrong with ric and beans…
Not so cool…
TRAFFIC TRAFFIC TRAFFIC- if at all possible make sure you have one other person with you so you can jump into the sane lane carpool and skip by the 'ocean of metal on' your right side…
Northwest airlines- customer service spotty, seats small and now they like all other air that I'm aware of are instituiting no snack policy to save money so be sure to pack your own treats for the long flight out there. Flying out always takes longer than coming home.
LAX security- we were there 2 hours before and still barely made out flight. LAX is just crazed with the mazes of security you go through even if you are going within the United States. STRONGLY suggested you arrive 3 hours ahead- I have it on good authority that traveling no longer has its slow times- its all busy coming out from LA and around the country per my flight attendant cousin…
